La Négation (ne...pas) et les Questions

In French, standard negation requires a two-part sandwich around the conjugated verb: 'ne' + verb + 'pas' (e.g., Je ne parle pas). Before a verb starting with a vowel or silent h, 'ne' elides to 'n'' (e.g., Je n'habite pas à Lyon, Il n'a pas de voiture). QUESTION FORMATION HAS THREE LEVELS OF FORMALITY: 1) Intonation (Informal): Raise pitch at sentence end ('Tu parles français?'); 2) 'Est-ce que' (Standard): Add 'Est-ce que' at the front of a statement ('Est-ce que tu parles français?'); 3) Inversion (Formal/Written): Swap verb and pronoun ('Parles-tu français?'). Question words (Où, Quand, Pourquoi, Comment, Combien, Qui) precede 'est-ce que' or inversion (Où est-ce que tu habites? / Où habites-tu?).
